Updated 8/23: Mini units added for suffix word endings (-s, -ing, ed), soft c & soft g, suffix -er & -est, plural change y to ies, prefixes & other suffixes.
Word study units are different from traditional spelling units. Instead of giving students a list of words to memorize each week, these word study units focus on a specific phonics skill. Students are given explicit instruction on the phonics pattern and then have activities throughout the week that allow them to practice the phonics skill, and investigate and discover the patterns in words.

I use this word study to replace my weekly spelling tests that I did last year. I noticed that students are transferring correct spelling of words into their daily writing more often.

Where has this been all my life? How have a lived without this? Good question. I printed and launched this week, yes we just stated 3 quarter. But when you realize that the new school you just started at has no real system ( Spalding has broken my heart) and the Winter Test scores show “no mastery” in the phonics standards, you have to do something different. I am not one to reinvent the wheel, so TPT to my rescue. This even better than what I have used before. Awesome Resource!

I stumbled across Mrs. Winter’s Bliss when researching the SOR and her resources and insight have been such a big help to me as I try to blend this type of instruction into my reading block. This resource is great for my struggling 3rd grade readers and I love how organized it is! Thank you!

My students loved doing the rainbow words and are now pros are sound mapping! It helps so much to accompany the word wall sounds as you uncover them. The activities help to give students some time with each sound!
