Updated: Now includes the beginning of the year spelling screener to determine where in the scope & sequence to begin word study with your students! 8/26/2022
Word study units are different from traditional spelling units. Instead of giving students a list of words to memorize each week, these word study units focus on a specific phonics skill. Students are given explicit instruction on the phonics pattern and then have activities throughout the week that allow them to practice the phonics skill, and investigate and discover the patterns in words.
Included in this resource:
- A research-based, SoR-aligned Scope and Sequence
- Master Word Study List
- Word Study Teacher Guide
- Word cards
- 3 Practice Printables for Each Unit
- Assessments that include: word dictation, sentence dictation & spelling error analysis
- Editable templates for printables & assessments
- A Family Letter for Each Unit
- A Teacher Assessment Guide and Master Word List
- Beginning of the Year Student Screener

Thank you!

I’ve been looking for a good Gr. 3 spelling program. I like this but feel the word search format is a little too difficult for this age. Fewer boxes mighty be better.

Thanks, Christina, all is well. The problem was on my end not yours. Sorry for my confusion and the previous review. Great resource!!

Hi Retha, I am sorry you are having a difficult time with the file. I just checked it. The wordlists are in the zipped file. It is called 3rd grade spelling lists and word cards. If you cannot see it here are a few things to try: check to see if your Adobe has been updated, go to my purchases and redownload the file. Let me know if that doesn’t help. I hope you will revise your feedback once you locate the file. Thanks!

This is a good resource but I would really appreciate it if the word lists could be on one page only, not a split page, as it makes it difficult for students to write in such small spaces! Please let me know if this is possible!

Hi, I created them on half sheets since so many teachers are restricted on copies/paper. I can put that on my list of things to do, I will have to recreate each page. In the meantime, you can print the pages you want whole sheet by choosing custom size 150% and it will make the pages whole sheet! Hope that helps 🙂

Love it!
