More About This Resource
This Sound Wall with Mouth Pictures & Sound Wall Locks is a comprehensive, Science of Reading-aligned tool designed to help students master phoneme awareness and phonics. Unlike traditional word walls, this sound wall organizes words by sounds (phonemes) rather than alphabetical order, providing students with a more effective reference when reading and spelling. The sound wall includes all the materials needed to systematically teach phonemes, making it perfect for educators who want to align their instruction with Science of Reading best practices, such as those suggested by LETRS. I love this sound wall! The real-life mouth pictures are a perfect addition to the wall. My kindergarten students constantly referred back to it last year.

I am using this for the 23-24 school year, so this is based on my initial observations. I really loved the sound spelling cards, the words to go under them with the important rule highlighted, the REAL pictures to articulate sounds, the fact that some sounds have two pictures since the mouth changes (i.e. oi, ou, etc.), and that there are even smaller word list cards to share with parents if needed. I can definitely see this helping with any students who may have speech needs.
I had to give this a 3 because, for how much this costs, I was hoping there would be an EDITABLE version, where the spelling sound cards have the picture but then we could type in using our own fonts. The font was not my favorite since I teach K/1 and wanted a more “primary” font (like “KG Neatly Printed). Also, some of the cards have a red box highlighting that the spelling pattern is at the end of a word, but not all of them do (i.e. red box for __ck but not for __ed). The inconsistency bothers me, but maybe I am just missing something? Additionally, I was hoping there would be blackline masters versions. Finally, the pictures of locks that are supposed to cover the spelling/sound patterns you haven’t covered yet are really blurry, and I was just expecting a bit more there.
Overall, I think there are a lot of great parts to this, but there is certainly a lot of room for improvement. If any of my concerns are addressed in future updates to this product, I’ll definitely make sure to update my review! 🙂

I absolutely loved this sound wall! My favorite part was the photographs of students’ actual faces when forming the sounds. This was perfect for our classroom and our transition to SOR. Thank you so much!

I jumped in “whole body” into “The Science of Reading” Thank you for this well needed resource. IT actually looks good on my board.

This visual display has changed the energy in my classroom. Students are able to walk right up to this board and make the sound that they are looking for, match it with their face and see what applies and apply it to their spelling. We use this resource when we introduce a new phonics skill and practice the mouth formations and give lots of examples that I have added to the board throughout the year!

Our school has delved into the “Science of Reading”. I put these up on the wall and found it too congested and very overwhelming. Instead, I made the cards a bit smaller and more manageable. Then the class used it as a living anchor chart.

I purchased this for the pictures of the mouths. It was so helpful for my students to see how the mouth forms with each sound.
