More About This Resource
The science of reading has proven that connecting phonemes (sounds) to graphemes (letters) aids students in the orthographic mapping process. This process allows students to permanently store words into their sight word memories. Using this resource, students will tap the sound they hear in a word and then map the graphemes that create those phoneme sounds.

My students love these self checking cards. It helps build confidence and I love how they follow the SoR and I don’t have to stress about tings being too hard once i have taught them explicitly.

I have used these with students in K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I usually project it on my whiteboard and use my dry erase markers to model, then have them do a few together, and they complete the rest on their page. I like how the words are dotted for each phoneme if they get stuck on the reading portion.

These word mapping activities are a game-changer for my grade 1s. They are the perfect bridge from the phonemic awareness activities that we do, to the encoding skills they desperately needed to develop. I am loving watching them grow into more confident writers and spellers!

This is a great resource to include both reading and spelling with controlled sounds. The option to fold the page to hide the words is another plus so students have to apply knowledge of sounds when spelling!
