Word study units are different from traditional spelling units.  Instead of giving students a list of words to memorize each week, these word study units focus on a specific phonics skill.  Students are given explicit instruction on the phonics pattern and then have activities throughout the week that allow them to practice the phonics skill, and investigate and discover the patterns in words.

    I like that this Word Study is based on patterns rather than random words. The only thing that I would like to see/have added is an editable word list so I can add/delete words. I have to type the lists out, which takes time!

    I loved using this as homework every week for my students. I loved the parent sheet, words cards, and activities that went along with each focus. However, my students did get bored of the same acitvities for each spelling pattern. I wish that she varied it up from week to week with more engaging follow ups.

    I have moved to a Spalding school. I like Spalding, but this school uses it very rigidly. I was surprised when I saw their Winter test scores. There isn’t really any application of the phonograms. They have them memorized but they don’t use them. So I need some word study. The science of reading is a great system. I did pick up both 2nd and 3rd grade for some leveling.

    I didn’t even use this resource which is a shame because it was expensive. I usually love everything from this seller, but this one I didn’t like. I do follow the science of reading and each week I focus on different phonics skills, but I tend to use more everyday words. I found that some of these words were more complex for the students that I have this year.
