More About This Resource
These Science of Reading-based literacy center activities have students use their knowledge of heart words (irregularly spelled high-frequency words) to create phoneme-grapheme word associations and practice phonemic awareness skills. This resource also includes editable templates to create a heart word center with any word.
Research shows irregular high-frequency words can be committed to memory after 1-4 exposures. For struggling readers, it can take up to 20 exposures. These centers will provide your students with the practice they need to be able to store heart words into their sight word memories. Use these activities for review at a center after you have explicitly and systematically introduced heart words to your students. Check out my Heart Words Teaching Slides for more!

This is a wonderful set for my first graders to practice mapping their Heart Words. We love this resource and it is great for guided practice that transitions into independent practice.

I loved using the heart words last year and I’m excited to use these activities to reinforce them this year!

This bundle is full of valuable resources that my students use for practicing heart words! They’re engaging, interactive, and fun! I make them available during center time, but I also push them out in Google Classroom for use at school and at home. I also use these resources with my tutoring students.
