More About This Resource
These Science of Reading-based literacy center activities have students use their knowledge of heart words (irregularly spelled high-frequency words) to create phoneme-grapheme word associations and practice phonemic awareness skills. This resource also includes editable templates to create a heart word center with any word.
Research shows irregular high-frequency words can be committed to memory after 1-4 exposures. For struggling readers, it can take up to 20 exposures. These centers will provide your students with the practice they need to be able to store heart words into their sight word memories. Use these activities for review at a center after you have explicitly and systematically introduced heart words to your students. Check out my Heart Words Teaching Slides for more!

My students love the hands on use of pop-its to help students hear the sounds in the heart words to help them identify the sounds that are not regular. These activities are very quick to prep and are editable to make sure they can be aligned to ant curriculum to make it more aligned to SOR strategies.
