More About This Resource
These differentiated decodable sentence building activities give kindergarten, first and second grade students practice reading and writing words that contain targeted phonics skills.
Each sentence is a phonics-based controlled text sentence that contains target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words, and irregular high-frequency words. The science of reading shows us that the connection between what our students learn in phonics and what they read & write is imperative for building a strong foundation in early reading!
In this activity, students move around the room with their recording sheet to read & write decodable sentences. There are 2 differentiated versions of each sentence that can be hung side by side throughout the classroom. Level one sentences follow a 1st grade phonics scope & sequence and Level two sentences follow a 2nd grade phonics scope & sequence. Students are taught to record the version of the sentence they can decode. They must also match each sentence to the correct picture on their recording sheet as a self check for decoding skills.

I love that I can provide differentiated reading and comprehension practice for my class. I used colors to differentiate the shapes in the sentences and student sheets. I put the sentences around the room, and my students just looked for their color to complete the activity.

These Write the Room Decodable Sentences are a fantastic way to get students moving and reading at the same time. The mix of CVC, blends, digraphs, and vowel teams provides great practice for different skill levels, and the sentences are clear and truly decodable. My students stay engaged and confident while working through them. Highly recommend for any early literacy classroom!
