More About This Resource
These differentiated decodable sentence building activities give kindergarten, first and second grade students practice reading and writing words that contain targeted phonics skills.
Each sentence is a phonics-based controlled text sentence that contains target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words, and irregular high-frequency words. The science of reading shows us that the connection between what our students learn in phonics and what they read & write is imperative for building a strong foundation in early reading!
In this activity, students move around the room with their recording sheet to read & write decodable sentences. There are 2 differentiated versions of each sentence that can be hung side by side throughout the classroom. Level one sentences follow a 1st grade phonics scope & sequence and Level two sentences follow a 2nd grade phonics scope & sequence. Students are taught to record the version of the sentence they can decode. They must also match each sentence to the correct picture on their recording sheet as a self check for decoding skills.

This is an amazing writing resource I use as a center in my first grade classroom. I can align the phonic skills (ex. r control) with the skill my class is either working on or needs more help with. My kids love it too! Gets them up and moving while learning too!

I am a big fan of write the room and solve the room activities, but this one was hard for students to understand compared to others I have set up. They were not sure which sentence to put where because there were no matching pictures. This may only be a problem because I have multiple types set up. The price feels a little steep for what it is. Overall, it is a good resource.

Interactive and fun way to practice mechanics of writing a sentence. Students enjoyed being up and walking around the room and didn’t even realize they were learning!
Teaching Tiny Stars –
I used this activity for my students who needed practice with both reading/decoding, and handwriting. It was great that it had the pictures next to it so that they could match the sentence to the picture.
