Each sentence is a phonics-based controlled text sentence that contains target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words, and irregular high-frequency words. The science of reading shows us that the connection between what our students learn in phonics and what they read & write is imperative for building a strong foundation in early reading!
In this activity, students move around the room with their recording sheet to read & write decodable sentences. There are 2 differentiated versions of each sentence that can be hung side by side throughout the classroom. Level one sentences follow a 1st grade phonics scope & sequence and Level two sentences follow a 2nd grade phonics scope & sequence. Students are taught to record the version of the sentence they can decode. They must also match each sentence to the correct picture on their recording sheet as a self check for decoding skills.
This resource includes:

My kiddos love Write the Room activities, although it was Write the Hallway last year due to COVID! This spring set was perfect for the last trimester because it is more challenging than just a single word. I love the differentiation and was proud of my students for not always choosing the easier sentence. 🙂

I wish I had discovered this resource sooner! It’s a fun way for students to practice proper sentence writing – gets them looking at all the details and they’re reading too! I’ll definitely be buying fall and winter for next year.
